Open Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

The court hears all misdemeanors, felonies punishable by up to five years, and some more serious felonies, plus civil cases likely worth no more than $50,000 and small claims up to $7,000. The Norfolk County District Attorney’s Office prosecutes criminal cases here.

Plan to drive or get a ride. Mass.gov says there is no public transportation to this courthouse, and parking is available in the back.

Court officers screen visitors with metal detectors and X-ray machines. Weapons are not allowed, and neither are photos or video inside.

On your first court date, check in at the probation office for an intake interview before heading to the courtroom. When your name is called, answer “Present.” The charges are read and a not guilty plea is usually entered. The judge can appoint a lawyer if you qualify, may address bail, and usually sets a pretrial conference date.

Some complaints go first to a clerk-magistrate show cause hearing. You are generally entitled to one if you are accused of a misdemeanor and were not arrested. Our show cause hearing guide explains more.

After a breath or blood test of 0.08 or more (0.02 under 21), police generally suspend your license immediately. If they did not, the judge must suspend it at arraignment once the prosecutor makes the required showing. It lasts until the case ends, for no more than 30 days (M.G.L. c. 90 § 24N). Refusing a test triggers a separate, longer suspension.

Look up case information and court dates free on MassCourts (masscourts.org). Most criminal cases can only be found by docket number, so enter it exactly as printed. Bring every paper about your case and allow at least three hours.
